Grinding problems

You must identify what the grinding issue is first.

  1. The unit is not grinding.

    A. Is the coffee mill coffee guide/grinder chute clogged?

(This step will apply just for models EC9335, Prestigio or Maestro)

    Solution:

Clean the coffee mill coffee guide/ grinder chute.

B. Is the burr grinder properly assembled on the unit?

Solution:

Provide instructions on how to assemble the burr correctly.

  1. Put the upper burr back in place.

  2. Inset the burr in its housing

  3. Turn the selector to select the desired grinding level.

  4. Make sure the burr is inserted correctly by pulling it by the handle. (if it is correctly inserted, it won't move.)

  1. I cannot reach the correct dosage on the filter.

    A. The amount of ground coffee exceed the max level

  1. Are you using the single filter for a double shot?

Solution: Use the correct filter

2. Is the dial selected too high?

Solution: Turn the dial gradually until you reach the correct quantity.

Solution: Use the correct filter.

2. Is the dial selected too low?

Solution: turn the ground coffee quantity dial to the correct position

3. Is the dosage dial set to the highest level?

If the dosage dial is at the highest level and we are still unable to get the correct amount, we need to replace the burr. Keep in mind the system will also indicate this with an alarm (see alarms section).

  1. The grinder is not moving

A. Did you insert the portafilter all the way in and hear a click?

If not: Insert the portafilter correctly.

B. Make sure you do not select the pre-ground option when using coffee beans.

Solution: set the dial to the correct position.

C. The bean hopper is not inserted correctly.

Make sure there is no light/alarm indicating this.

To insert the bean hopper to its correct position:

Turn it until it locks into place, be careful, do not turn the grinder adjustment dial.

D. Make sure the grinder adjustment dial is pointing to a number in the coarseness range.

E. Is the coffee mill coffee guide clogged?

(This step will apply just for models EC9335, Prestigio or Maestro)

Solution: Clean the coffee mill coffee guide

F. If the unit has a “Smart Tamping Station” Make sure the tamper lever is in its off position, otherwise the grinder will not work.

The coffee beans look broken/ not ground in the portafilter.

A. Do you hear the grinder working and no grains come out?

Solution: Clean the burrs.

Clean as follows:

  1. Empty the bean container (if necessary, using a vacuum cleaner to remove any remaining beans).

  2. Attach the portafilter and operate the grinder without beans to free the coffee guide, then attach the portafilter to the outlet of the coffee grinder, lining it up with "INSERT", then turning it to the right . Grinding begins when the portafilter reaches the CLOSE position and stops automatically.

  3. Turn the appliance off.

  4. Remove the bean container. When cleaning the bean container, clean the container housing and upper burr with a damp cloth.

  5. Turn the fineness selector counterclockwise as far as it will go to the "REMOVE" position.

  6. Extract the upper burr, gripping it by the handle.

  7. Clean the burr with a brush and remove the coffee residues using a vacuum cleaner.

  8. Put the upper burr back in place.

  • Insert the burr in its housing.

  • Turn the selector to select the desired grinding level.

  • Make sure the burr is inserted correctly by pulling it by the handle. If it is correctly inserted, it will not move.

  1. Use a brush to remove any coffee residue from the outlet of the coffee grinder.

TIP: Over time, the burrs will wear down. If that happens, you can easily fix it by adjusting the grinder dial.

Coffee issues

Coffee doesn't flow

  1. Remove the portafilter from the appliance and try to brew espresso without the portafilter.

  • If water is not coming out:

    • Check if there is water in the water tank or if the water tank is fully inserted.

    • If the tank has been inserted incorrectly and the valves on the bottom are not open: Press the tank down lightly to open the valves on the bottom.

    • Try to remove the water tank and install it again.

    • The water tank filter is not installed correctly. Remove it and install it again.

The issue is an airlock caused by the water filter not being inserted correctly most of the time.

  • If there is water coming out:

    • It could be that the coffee is too fine or not fine enough.

Solution: turn the dosage dial to the correct position. We can only do this while the grinder is operating.

    • The filter is clogged: You need to press the “teacup button” to descale the machine

  • Correct dosage on the tamper :

Set the dosage dial until you reach the perfect dose.

  • It could be that the filter is clogged (Just for the pressurized filter)

Solution: Clean the filter or Descale the machine.

Each model has a different way to clean the filter. For specific instructions look at the manual.

Crema issues

  1. No crema

  • Verify if the pressure gauge is in the optimal zone range. If not, see pressure gauge problems.

  • Make sure you set the dosage dial in the correct position (make sure the coffee is not too coarse or too fine).

  • Make sure you have the right amount of coffee in the filter (reach the mark).

  • Make sure you are using fresh coffee beans.

Lights / Alarms problems

Warning + Grinding icons flash briefly at regular intervals

This alarm may be present when the customer is turning the grinder dial to the maximum level.

Validate if the grinder is working properly first, if not follow grinding problems instructions.

Descale light won't go off

Solution: descale the unit, check if the customer completed the process correctly, and look at the unit manual. (use the one that corresponds to the model of the unit).

Important: Make sure the customer returns the dial back to the drink selection after completing the descaling process.

  • If during the rinse cycle, the water tank has not been filled to the MAX level this light may persist.

  • Solution: rinse the unit.

  • If you already tried to follow what is on the manual but the light is still flashing: probably the customer stopped after the process ended.

  • Solution: descale the unit, and check if the customer completed the process correctly.

Leaking water

  • Customer sees water leaking inside the drip tray:

    • This is normal, the machine discharges water during the brew/steam cycles.

  • From drip tray onto the countertop:

    • Check if the drip tray is full and requires it to be emptied. The red float should rise.

  • Leaking around the portafilter:

    • The portafilter is inserted incorrectly

    • Solution: Attach the portafilter correctly to the coffee outlet and rotate firmly as far as it goes.

For the EC9335 model only: The filter is clogged, and the perforated filter is missing or dirty: clean the filter.

  • Water tank:

    • Make sure the water tank is fully inserted correctly.

    • The water tank might be broken; therefore, you should check for any fissures.

  • From underneath the machine

    • The machine needs to go to a Service Center.

Pressure Gauge issues

  1. Pressure Gauge blacked at zero

If the pressure gauge remains blocked at zero despite the machine delivering coffee.

  • Put the coffee outlet cleaning disk in the portafilter and try to brew coffee.

If the pressure gauge needle doesn't move, the situation needs to be handled by a Service Center

  1. Not reaching the optimal zone

It means that the coffee in the portafilter is not reaching the max mark and the coffee ground is too coarse.

Solution: Adjust the coffee grinder to its finer setting. We can only do this while the grinder is operating.

  1. The pressure gauge goes to the maximum level.

It means that the water is having difficulty coming out of the filter.

  • The ground coffee is too fine. Adjust the dial to the coarse setting. We can only do this while the grinder is operating.

  • Make sure the coffee is not passing the max mark in the portafilter.

  • The coffee filter might be dirty/clogged.

Steaming issues

The machine is not frothing:

A. For units with Manual steam wonder

  • Make sure the steam dial is fully open.

  • Make sure the milk nozzle holes are clean.

  • Always clean the frother after each session

  • Check that the frother's o-rings are all intact.

  • Best to use cold milk with a 2% or less fat content

  • Stainless steel pitchers are best but can froth in any type of container

  • Be sure not to fully immerse the nozzle of the frother into the milk. The small hole at the top of the nozzle must stay above the milk line. As the milk aerates, it will grow in volume so you must lower the container keeping that hole free

B. Manual Professional steam wonder (Models Arte, Prestigio, and Maestro)

The customer may need to have more skills to be able to create the perfect frothing. Refer to the video “How to create latte art”.

C. For units with Carafe

  • Always use the clean function to clean the milk carafe after each session.

  • Check the frother has all o'rings intact on the shaft

  • Ensure that the shafts have all holes cleaned.

  • It's best to use 2%-fat milk. Lower-fat milk may not produce too much foam.

  • Make sure to fully disassemble the carafe and clean it. Make sure to immerse it in the multi-clean solution or water with dish soap.
